SMEG, history of an Italian excellence

SMEG, an Italian design story

SMEG has a story of success and beauty, but, above all, it is a beautiful, all-Italian story. From the iconic red to new pastel hues, SMEG accessories and appliances have become part of a modern and sophisticated décor that winks at the great Italian tradition.

Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, this is SMEG.

SMEG, founded by Vittorio Bertazzoni, came out not as an appliance company but as an enameling and metalworking company in 1948. Bertazzoni's idea, however, was more significant. In the 1950s, in addition to metalworking, came the production of cooking appliances, such as Elisabeth, the first gas stove with automatic ignition similar to American cookers.

From a kitchen to a whole house by SMEG.

Elisabeth has been alone for a short time. Taking inspiration from the traditional American style, SMEG broadened its horizons. With Leda comes the first washing machine, and in the 1970s, Niagara, the first dishwasher with a capacity of 14 place settings, is patented. Before long come built-in ovens and cooktops. 1982 is the year of professional ovens for bars and restaurants.

SMEG between designers and iconicity

The 1980s and 1990s for SMEG meant great collaborations with architects and designers such as Franco Maria Ricci, Guido Canali, Mario Bellini, Renzo Piano, Marc Newson, Raffaella Mangiarotti, and Matteo Bazzicalupo. Large industrial accessories also become smaller and more usable in the home, such as range hoods, sinks, and refrigerators, making the brand an international design icon.

The 2000s is the golden age of SMEG

Over the years, the company continues reinventing itself and making ever more iconic and unforgettable accessories. Refrigerators, blast chillers, microwave ovens, coffee machines, mixers, toasters, and many other accessories in classic colors evolve and take on the new pastel shades.

All shades you can find at Vittorio Bagagli, the perfect place where history and design meet, always.
